You may not think you’d find superb live jazz at a supermarket, but if you stop by the Whole Foods in West Orange on a Tuesday, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. This week, Teaneck bassist Ray Drummond will be joined by tenor saxophonist Jed Levy. Between them, they have played with a who’s who in jazz, including Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis and Jaki Byard. Helio Alves will make a trip to the market, to play jazz, tonight.

It may be a stretch of the imagination to envision a grocery store as a hip jazz venue, but that’s precisely what Whole Foods Market in West Orange aims to do with its series of Tuesday evening performances.

This week, Brazilian pianist Helio Alves takes the “stage” with drummer Adriano Santos. The two will play Brazilian standards and original compositions. Alves’ excellent new CD, “Musica,” was released last year on the South Orange-based Jazz Legacy Productions label.
